Located on a beautiful 360-acre campus outside of Birmingham, Glenwood Foundation new Hope Cottages will consist of 3 cottage-style homes to accommodate 16 residents with autism and behavioral challenges. Designed specifically for the special needs of the occupants, the Hope Cottages focus on creating a peaceful and enriching environment on a site that overlooks the serene Turkey Foot Lake.
The three cottages are arranged around a common outdoor space that shares a fire pit area and pavilion overlooking the lake. Each home is designed to maximize natural daylighting and to invite residents outdoors with private screened-in porches and comfortable outdoor spaces to take advantage of the many health benefits that nature offers.
The two 6-room cottages and one 4-room cottage have double-height common room kitchen and living spaces for social gathering while private bedrooms and bathrooms are provided for each resident. The architectural character is vernacular, using warm natural materials that fit comfortably into this wooded site. The larger building footprints are broken down into smaller pieces to retain a human scale that is most comfortable for the residents.
